Vice President to George H. W. Bush, 1989-1993
Republican Party
Indiana

Dan Quayle, a lawyer from Huntington, Indiana, spent four years in the House of Representatives and eight years in the Senate before being chosen by George H. W. Bush as his vice presidential candidate.  There are two sides to the Quayle vice presidency:  the public perception, largely gained through on-going disputes with the media and the dutiful vice president who accomplished more than most realize.  Vice President Quayle was an active member of the Bush Administration, especially with foreign relations.  Vice President Quayle visited 47 foreign countries during his term in office, especially in South America and Asia.  He was especially involved behind the scenes during the Persian Gulf War.  He chaired the Council on Competitiveness.  Vice President Quayle may also be remembered for championing the family structure, despite receiving ridicule for his stand against a breakdown of values
he saw in television, music and society.
